Press Release:

SIMULACRA will present Wu Linghao’s solo exhibition「Hinterland @ Through Stomach Surgery¿ ¿Table Soaked //// Blue」 in September 16, 2023, showcasing a series of his latest paintings created over the past year. Since late 2022, Wu Linghao’s creative perspective and methods have undergone a transformation and extension, shifting from “linguistic assembly of interfaces” to the “structured generation of machine desire.” Scattered online images are replaced by indefinable organic forms, performing desires in theatrical natural settings, hinting at the artist’s deeper exploration of life and the online ecosystem.

Vast deserts, expansive horizons, and profound, eerie skies set the stage for enigmatic entities. They appear isolated, abrupt, singular, with surfaces covered in apertures, seemingly calling for an emotional response. The surreal scenes resemble ancient dreams unfolding between heaven and earth, primal and uncontrollable, akin to monuments perpetually growing, entwining, proliferating, and evolving in bizarre forces.

This driving force, from Aristotle’s “potentiality and actuality” to Deleuze’s “desiring machines,” constitutes the lineage of the “mechanization of the world picture,” deeply rooted in the human unconscious—within every observation and measurement, every breath and heartbeat, input and feedback. The drive of machine desire allows the interaction of inner desires with the material reality of the external world, giving rise to each classic law and every moment when dreams and glory come true. It is the “most familiar stranger” within us, quietly lurking, constantly expanding and colonizing in motives, language, and actions.

Wu Linghao’s latest practice continues the painting tradition of Surrealist “desiring machines,” with a stronger emphasis on the physical motion of machines, revealing the savage and violent nature of desire through monotonous yet powerful repetitive dynamics. For the artist, machines become the carriers of imaginative desire and forms, and their logic and methods of “assembly” form the basis of the composition. When viewers carefully examine the artwork, they can discern the deformation of the human body through shapes of different materials. He suggests an ongoing universal process: as technology continually imprints itself on our unconscious, humans and objects are inevitably merging into one.
