Overview:The livestock shed on the grassland serve as shelters for cattle and sheep to protect them from the wind and cold, as well as to store their winter fodder. The livestock shed are also where lambs are born in the spring. In the summer, when the shack are idle, Shinetana uses them as an art studio, transforming them into a "third space."
In her project, Newtana moves the framework of a yurt into a livestock pen, where she sits holding a lamb inside the framework. The pen and yurt, as living spaces for nomadic people after settling down, are spaces into which the artist's body is integrated as a part of the work, recreating the whole structure of nomadic life. This is meant to illustrate the continuation of this nomadic lifestyle in the present day. The "lamb" signifies the "present moment," a purpose of nomadism. The introduction of a living being into the work is a declaration from the artist, who lives between the city and the grasslands.
Though the methods of nomadism may have changed, nomadic life will endure. Undeniably, it will always be connected with vibrant, primal life and the pulse of existence. The connection with the spiritual essence of nature at its most original and fundamental level will remain the fuel for the survival of nomadic people. This spirituality retains a sense of wild freedom. However, for Newtana and for the herders, they don't need to strive for this, as it already emerges naturally through their interaction with the cosmos.
