Press Release:

Soka Art is pleased to announce the exhibitions of Wang Xiaoshuang's "Rhapsody of Life" and Anna Nganleong Cheung's "Spiral Voyage" will be held on December 1, 2023 at Soka Art Beijing. The exhibitions, curated by Ning Wen, presented more than twenty new artworks created by both artists in the year 2023.

Reflections on the body, distance, and emotions have always been one of the main lines of Wang Xiaoshuang's artistic creation, and "Rhapsody of Life" presents another creative theme, "Exploration of Life", which is also the core of the artist's recent creations starting in 2022. Hence the title of the exhibition "Rhapsody of Life", which presents the artist's new understanding of life and living after 2022, and the new works gradually become broader and more expansive compared to the previous works that focused on individualized psychological experiences. The first work of the new series, Circle of Life·1, is inspired by the birth of the artist's child in 2022, while Meditator, the last work in the new series, echoes Circle of Life·1,expressing the artist's thinking on life and death: the return of life is not the end, but another kind of rebirth.

Wang Xiaoshuang's works are reminiscent of Western classical paintings, especially those of the Renaissance. The characters in the paintings that seem to have nothing to do with reality are the mirror images of people in reality, they are intertwined with each other to form an abstracted scene of life, reacting to the invisible with the visible. Wang Xiaoshuang's paintings appear to be figurative, flat and static, but underneath the picture lies a powerful vitality. Both her old and new paintings are characterized by a number of similarities: (1) A mysterious sense of tranquility is always present in her works. (2) Wang Xiaoshuang prefers to paint individuals, and the eyes of the characters in her works may be a bit strange, they rarely look directly at the viewer. (3) As for the costumes, the images always seem to transport viewers to medieval Europe – whether it is a loose robe, or ruffled and tightened cuffs. And in Wang Xiaoshuang's new works, two new features have emerged: (1) It breakthrough the flatness existing in the artist's previous paintings. For the first time, Wang Xiaoshuang attempts to mix acrylic paint with sandstone collodion, which presents a grainy feel and a certain thickness, as if it was an ancient rock fresco, increasing the texture of the painting. (2) Regarding the use of color, new works with higher color saturation have appeared, breaking the predominantly low saturation in previous works.

"Rhapsody of Life" embodies the artist's respect, reverence and gratitude for life, celebrating the existence and power of life. The salute to life is not only about cherishing one's own life, but also about respecting and caring for the lives of others. By honoring and cherishing life, we can experience more deeply the beauty and magic of life, as well as the connection and symbiotic relationship between ourselves and the entire universe.
